چکیده

A parametrically amplified ring detector for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is presented. The system consists of eight coupled PCBs arranged as an octagon. Each carries three L-C resonators, for signal, idler and pump frequencies. Adjacent signal resonators and pump resonators are magnetically coupled, so these two frequencies propagate as magneto-inductive waves; however, the idlers are uncoupled. The signals interact via varactors, allowing amplification of signals from a rotating dipole source by the threefrequency process. Uniform gain is demonstrated in a non-magnetic system suitable for H MRI at 1.5T.

Three-frequency parametric amplification in magneto-inductive ring resonators

Parametric amplification of magneto-inductive (MI) waves propagating in magnetically coupled chains of nonlinear L–C resonators is studied. Analysis is first presented for a three-frequency travelling wave scheme in which the signal, idler and pump all propagate as MI waves. The effect of de-coupling the idlers is then considered and it is shown that this configuration relaxes the standard phas...

Flexible Magneto-Inductive Resonators and Waveguides

A flexible metamaterial RF detector for magnetic resonance imaging is described. The circuit consists of a polygonal arrangement of magnetically coupled L-C resonators with rectangular inductors, which supports magneto-inductive waves. The elements are mechanically linked to allow adjacent elements to rotate as the ring is flexed. The pivot is optimised to hold the nearest neighbour coupling co...

Theory of Distorted Magneto-Inductive Ring Resonators

An analytic theory of periodically perturbed magneto-inductive waveguides is developed and used to determine the mode spectrum of distorted MI ring resonators. A set of coupled equations is first established from the recurrence equations for an infinite set of coupled elements, and used to determine the dispersion equation. Solutions for ring resonators are then found using periodic boundary co...

MR-Safe Cables – an Application of Magneto-inductive Waves?

An analysis is presented of transmission lines that are periodically interrupted by isolation transformers. Such lines have applications in magnetic resonance imaging, where the transformers act to block common-mode signals excited by the transmitter while passing differential mode signals from a detector. The dispersion characteristics are derived, and it is shown that the line is a form of me...

Resistive power divider for magneto-inductive waveguides

Addressing the need for passive magneto-inductive components, a lumped-element symmetric power divider has been designed and realised for a magneto-inductive cable with the resonant frequency of 95 MHz and the passband between 73 and 174 MHz. In agreement with the theory, the measured coupling loss is 6 dB for most of the passband independent of the input port. Having proved useful for magneto-...
